Brain tanning 101- the basics for beginners.
JOIN BC FIREARMS ACADEMY’S HIDE-TANNING COURSE, JANUARY 30-31 2021
Instructor: Roberta Watt
Tanning is one of the most unifying and historically established crafts worldwide. Crossing every territory, continent, culture and ages, tanning has been at the fore of daily life. In modern times, however, this is a dying art. Nearly impossible to comprehend through reading, video, or verbal explanation alone, tanning is truly a craft that takes hands-on learning, time, and good ol’ fashioned trial, and error.
In this two-day course I hope to utilize my acquired skills and knowledge in the most valuable way I know how: to teach others and encourage passion in the aspiring and novice tanner. This is a craft that I handle with great respect, care, dignity, hard work, and attention to detail and am honoured to have the opportunity to share my understanding in a workshop format.
For this session, we will be honing in on hair-on brain tanning (the hide will be more like a finished pelt, soft and supple with the animal hair still intact.)
The course will include an educational portion- discussing the makeup of skin, the chemical process of tanning, the various methods used worldwide and spanning centuries of practice, and various critical troubleshooting and trial and error pieces that will be helpful to new tanners.
The hands-on portion will be the majority of the course- we want everyone to go home with a complete or almost complete product even given our short window of time! We will work hard as a group to learn the fleshing process, the brain preparation and application, and the most crucial step of softening the hide utilizing various techniques.
All too often hunters pour their heart and soul into a successful harvest, and I hope that this course can provide just one more solo or family-based effort to honour your animal and your hunt and feel the pride of making your very own leather.
