Firearms Acronyms and Initialisms in Canada

PAL

Stands for Possession Acquisition Licence. The PAL is issued by the Canadian Firearms Program a division of the RCMP. This license is required throughout Canada for possessing and acquiring non-restricted firearms.

RPAL

Stands for Restricted Possession Acquisition License. The RPAL is issued by the Canadian Firearms Program. This license is required throughout Canada for possessing and acquiring restricted firearms.

Most people complete the combined course that satisfies the RCMP requirements for both non-restricted and restricted licenses. There is only one license given from the CFP, but it may be for good for either one or two categories (non-restricted only or non-restricted and restricted).

Check out bcfirearmsacademy.ca for a list of non-restricted and restricted firearms

CFSC

Stands for Canadian Firearms Safety Course. This is a federally mandated course. Successful completion of the CFSC allows an individual to apply to the RCMP for their non-restricted license (PAL). It is an 8 hour course. Testing consists of a written true/false component as well as a practical handling component.

CRFSC

Stands for Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course. This is a federally mandated course. Successful completion of the CRFSC allows an individual to apply to the RCMP for their (you guessed it!) restricted license (RPAL). It is a 6 hour course. Testing consists of a written true/false component as well as a practical handling component.

To take the CRFSC you must first have successfully competed the CFSC (non-restricted course). BC Firearms Academy strongly recommends the combined course

CORE

Stands for Conservation and Outdoor Recreation Education. This is overseen by the BCWF. Successful completion of this course allows an individual to apply for their Fish and Wildlife ID number.

WATC

Stands for Wilderness Authorization to Carry. This is the license which allows you to carry a restricted firearm in the wilderness. This would apply to individuals whose jobs are in remote wilderness areas of BC.

FAC

Stands for Firearms Acquisition Certificate. They were the Firearms License in Canada from 1977-1995. They have all expired and need to be replaced by a PAL.

POL

Stands for Possession Only License. It is no longer valid. If you had a POL that expired before Sep 2 1995, you will need to apply for a PAL and take the requisite course (CFSC).

All bookings must be made through BC Firearms Academy at 604-592-2410 or bcfirearmsacademy.ca .
