Everything a New Hunter Needs: Non-Restricted PAL with a Hunting Seminar and a CORE Challenge

WHAT IS IN YOUR 2-DAY BC HUNTING PACKAGE

Day 1: The Canadian Firearms Safety Course (CFSC) Completing this Canadian Firearms Safety Course (CFSC) is required to apply for your non-restricted PAL (Possession Acquisition License).

This is the federal license to own and use firearms in Canada.

Day 2: BC Hunting Seminar & CORE Challenge The BC Hunting Seminar is a day of engaging discussion with an experienced hunter culminating with a CORE Challenge exam. You will feel confident in your ability to safely start hunting. You can then apply for your FWID to hunt in BC. Challenge the CORE with confidence.  

The FWID is the provincial certification that lets you buy hunting licenses and tags.

Details About The BC Hunting Package

Participants must be 12 Years of age or Older to complete the PAL component of the Hunting package and apply for a Minor’s Firearms License.

This is one package. The Canadian Firearms Safety Course is completed in its entirety in one day and a hunting education seminar with a CORE challenge exam challenge is independent on a second day.

There are more than 18 hours of hunting and safety material in this package including; online quizzes, flashcards, videos, reading materials, in-person lecture specifications and BC-specific hunting tips.

Following the completion of each day, students must successfully complete the examinations to be eligible to apply for licensing. Although this package will give you the confidence to complete your CORE Challenge, this seminar is not a “CORE course. CORE courses are available through BCFA.“.

The Canadian Firearms Safety Course is conducted by an RCMP-certified instructor. The hunting seminar is delivered by active and experienced BC hunters. The CORE exam Challenge is provided by a BCWF-certified CORE Examiner.

Canadian Firearms Safety Course

Course content includes:

  • The evolution of firearms, major parts, types and actions
  • Basic firearms safety procedures
  • Operating firearm actions
  • Safe handling and carry procedures
  • Firing techniques and procedures
  • Care and maintenance of firearms
  • Laws: Safe storage, display, transportation and handling of restricted and non-restricted firearms
  • Ammunition
  • Responsibilities of the firearms owner/user

  • Government Issued ID

CORE Challange

The CORE Manual and the Hunting and Trapping Regulation Synopsis are the resource manuals used to learn these subjects.

BC Residents who are 18 years of age or older and who wish to obtain a hunting licence are required to complete the CORE Program. The goal of the CORE Program is to ensure that prospective hunters meet acceptable standards of knowledge and skill for safe and ethical participation in hunting recreation.

The Hunter Safety Training Regulation prescribes the required fees for the CORE Program is $30 for each test and $30 for the graduate certificate.

Individuals who have completed a hunter education program from another province or territory of Canada, or a state of the United States of America are exempt from the requirement to complete the CORE Program. Contact a Service B.C. Centre for more details on program exemption.

Designated Agency

The BC Wildlife Federation (BCWF) operates the CORE Program on behalf of the Ministry of  Forests, Lands, and Natural Resource Operations.

 

Minor’s Licence:

Individuals younger than 18 and older than 12 years of age are only eligible to hold a non-restricted firearms license and as such will not be permitted to write the restricted portion of the Canadian Firearms Safety Course exam nor take the course for credit.

A minor’s licence permits the borrowing of non-restricted firearms for:

  • target practice;
  • organized shooting competitions;
  • hunting; and,
  • instruction in the use of firearms.

A minor’s licence also permits the acquisition of ammunition, unless there is an age restriction under the provincial or territorial law.

*You must be 12 years and older to complete all sections of the BC Hunting Package. Individuals 10 – 11 but under 12, can attend but will not be eligible to complete the CFSC testing.
