Do I need to take a course to apply for a WATC?

No! The WATC is issued to professionals who have passed a Proof of Proficiency (PoP). A course is not required to shoot the WATC. BC Firearms Academy provides training for those interested in perfecting their skills. For those requiring only the WATC BCFA provides the Proof of Proficiency (POP).

In addition, all Wilderness ATC applications must include the following:

    • Employer’s confirmation of employment and description of work duties; or
    • If self-employed, a copy of your municipal business operating licence and description of your work duties; or
    • If self-employed, a letter from your residential municipality exempting you and your business activity from the requirement of a business licence along with a description of your work duties; and
    • A copy of your company’s firearms policy and training syllabus as required by the Workers’ Compensation Board (if registered).

Note: The Canadian Firearms Program and the British Columbia Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations I Yukon Ministry of Environment do not endorse or recommend the use of a handgun for protection against predatory animals. Animal avoidance techniques should always be the first line of defence; however, if a firearm is necessary British Columbia Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations I Yukon Ministry of Environment recommend a Defender-style shotgun.
